Bugs Bunny on Broadway was the name of the show we saw at the Charlotte Symphony in Charlotte NC.
There were two acts and two hours of absolute happiness for all of we attendees and believe me, the place was packed. All of our favorite Bugs cartoons and it was the Charlotte Symphony orchestra who performed the music that had been in the sound tracks, and they did it flawlessly. They even did "Looney Toons" and "Merrie Melodies" ("That’s all Folks") The show has been seen by two million people since it was first presented in 1990. I will mention also that I read the original orchestra music was taken away, split electronically, from the cartoon films (we in the audience saw a large screen with the cartoons shown on it) but the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra was playing all of the original music themselves.Mr. George Daugherty, originator of this show, was the Conductor.
A fascinating fact was reported in The Charlotte Observer, Charlotte’s daily newspaper, that all of the music scores played by that original orchestra in Hollywood many many years ago had not been preserved. So there were no music sheets/scores to play from. Hence Mr. Daugherty put fifteen students from the University of Southern California’s film scoring program to work. In each cartoon those students picked out each instrument’s part by ear. THINK of how HARD that is!!! Mr. Daugherty said they were sitting listening over and over again and writing the notes they heard for each instrument down so that a musical score could be created again, and played by anyone. What a wonderful job they did! And now if you are fortunate enough to have this show come to your city..go. It’s worth it for two hours of smiles and great music. You remember probably that the Bugs Bunny cartoons and other Warner Brothers cartoons of course featured classical music. Those cartoons are some folks only acquaintance with Classical music and they don’t even know they are listening to it.
Here is another photo of something in that consignment shop I spoke of yesterday and included pictures from. It reminded me of another blogger called Gandalf, and his favorite instrument… one he blogs about often.
I slept unmoving all night long and I woke lying on my left side this morning..a furry "hand" on my face was patting me awake. When I opened my eyes, she was on her side facing me just inches away, and her head was also on a carved out by her section of the other pillow. Mirroring me. Sometimes you just want a picture.
Here\’s a tid bit for you: Japan has a fascination with video games that some may or may not realize and in fact it\’s often called the Mecca of gaming. They have very talented orchestras as well and have put Mario music from various Mario games to orchestra nd even some of the other games like Silent Hill. I have some of it and really dig the strane twist on classical or rock music from those games.
So many saxes, so little time. Thanks Carole. I grabbed the picture and trust you don\’t mind. :o)
Sounds wonderful!!!! so glad you got to enjoy that. and hi to miss Catt too.. hugs, lottemae
The show sound great. Lots of fun for you and your boys. I loved those cartoons when I was a kid.The pictures have great clarity and the one of Miss Catt is especially gorgeous.
The sjow sounds like a lot of effort was put into it. There are so many films and musical score for them that are lost. It is amazong the different ways they use to recover them. Miss Catt looks quite content.Love ya,Al
Sounds like you had a great time. Love the photos but the one of your Kitty is Priceless..My Cat will sleep with me and sometimes she cant get close enough. I find myself giving her all the room so she is happy.. What is wrong with that picture.. haha.
Sounds and actually looks just grand… That\’s all folks. Marilyn
WOW I got this on my alerts so something is now working.. Nice pics that shop looks really interesting.. I love to look at all the old stuff. HOly cow those musicians are talented to be able to do all that!!! Amazing.. : )
I remember clearly watching Looney Tunes with my 5 brothers. My mother was always in the kitchen sipping tea. When I grew older she confdied in me that it was the music that drew her to a peaceful place. How cool is that?
The good ole days…trying to find cartoons I find appropraite for my 2 year old is impossible these days…thank God for The Little Einsteins and Jacks Big Music Show on Noggin…nothing is as it used to be. That kitty is just so beautiful…gotta love her.
I would have loved to hear an seen that. Like the picture I too must get some sleep.
The Warner Brothers cartoons were the best. I also have an affection for the original Popeye cartoons and of course Betty Boop. In reference to the first picture, they look like emaciated saxaphones and I need to be brushed.
How did I miss this post? I love Looney Toons – my kind of entertainment! Hmm…I\’ve looked the first pic over and don\’t see a thing that screams "buy me". The second pic warms my heart. Hugs to you and the lovely, Miss Catt.
Great post! You know me–I love anything having to do with music. My Ex (who passed away last year) wrote all the arrangements for his 6 piece dance band (piano, bass, drums, sax, trumpet and trombone) all from ear. He learned how to do that when he was in the Navy in the \’50s. He said one guy he knew in the Navy Music School would go to the movies with his orchestral score pad and sit through the movie about 3 times, and write the entire score down! Believe me, that is no easy thing to do (speaking from experience as a music major in college). Would really love to see that show sometime. What a great memory that will always be for you and your family. Miss Catt looks so happy you\’re home!
Being a fan of history, Bugs, classical music, YOU, and Miss Catt, I so enjoyed this blog. I love the way Daugherty seized the moment…being my kind of teacher…and had his students help to make a most enjoyable production for everyone and I hope to see it some day.K\’s sister has been learning the sax… and I do love listening to its soulful sound…even if I am not a musical person myself. Great pictures, as usual, and what a sweet shot of Miss Catt. I love how she is surrounded by her favorite things… and her mouse in the background. =D
