Beth has her ‘count down to Spring’. My way is to count down till I cook the hummingbirds’ their first nectar and fill the feeder, hang it out and wait anxiously for the first arrivals. That is the most fun and looked forward to day of the new year for me. That will be April 9th. Sometimes they show up so quickly it is as though they were ( and they were) sitting and waiting. Last year I despaired of them ever coming. It was well into the third week of April before the first arrivals. I have never known them to be that late. They may have found someone else and then remembered me. Bring 4 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar, no food coloring..the red of the feeder parts is enough, trust me and food coloring is bad for them) to a boil..take off heat and let cool…put into a clean glass bottle and tightly cap. Store in the fridge. Inexpensive AND better for them. The sellers color theirs strongly and yes, the birds drink it, but they would be so much better off without the chemicals in it. Hummingbirds cake up my feeder there are so many so they don’t miss the red gunk.
I have done my duty on the treadmill and etc. I missed 2 days due to my eye feeling badly. Took the wind out of my sails pretty much. It’s still red, sigh, and twinged a bit but now I have been up and worked it in so to speak, the little twinges are gone. Today I will just skip eye makeup and go on and do the rest of my face. I just don’t want to touch my eyes or that area to clean my face. Best for me to do is to show off my blonde eyelashes. 🙂
It’s close to ten, I think I will get ready for the day and head out into the always present rain. Oh..by the way, we are having rock slide after rock slide after rock slide all over the State onto the roads and highways and Interstates due to the incessant rain. Every day there is a report of another. That’s how all of OUR States road funds are being used..the Herculean task of trying to move the rocks off the road. Other States use theirs up with snow removal..us, rocks.
I-40’s vast rock slide at the border of TN and NC is STILL in the process of being cleaned up and that since October last year. It was a massive slide. There are detours all over the State.
I’ve been around to a few of you and after I get my face on, I’ll see the rest of ya.

I love hummingbirds, they are so delicate and lovely. Don\’t you often wonder what adventures your adopted hummingbird is having? I am so glad your eye is better.
I heard about those rock slides over there on the news and thought of you… hope you don\’t get too near any… that would be a bummer!! ;-)We had some hummingbirds, but since Ike, they haven\’t come our way. We put the stuff out, anyway, in hopes. You know… their late show last year could have been a pre-warning to this years weather.. it\’s a thought. I doubt that they "forgot" about you. It\’s more like their migratory patters were changed, like the summer extended for longer where they were, then they wouldn\’t show up until later…
Rock slides are scary and I would sure hate to get hit by them driving along the road. Every state has their own special problems don\’t they.Have a good day gf.
Never tried the hummingbird feeders. My siter-in-law further north has them. Haven\’t seen the hummingbirds here though.
I\’m glad to hear of the improvement on your eye. I have great sympathy with eye issues being a contact wearer…I know how things can really effect life when it comes to being able to see…such a little thing…such a huge thing. Rain for you huh? It\’s four degrees here today and there\’s plenty of snow that I think will be with us until July…sheesh! I haven\’t been able to do my regular exercises because of my rib…I can\’t wait to get back to that and walking…lifting and walking are two of my favorite things to stay in shape…I miss it! Have a good day Carole.
Oh the thought of hanging a hummingbird feeder brings Spring closer somehow. Thanks. I remember hanging the first feeder here after we settled in. I never saw any hummers here and figured there wasn\’t any…NOT! You hang it, and they will come! I can see them fly above the fenceline and on up the hill then a sharp turn to the feeder. They leave the same way usually or sit on the wire cow panel to observe. Happy to hear your eye is improving. That really was ah poke you did. I am not used to falling rocks, that must be scary for sure. Have a good day today my friend.
I need to get a new feeder. Dropped and broke ours so didn\’t have one up and it will probably take some time to get them to come here. Good you eye is getting so much better. Now remember the finger does not fit in the eye. All kidding aside I know that had to hurt like the dickens.
For a brief second reading your second sentence I thought you were going to offwer us a bizzare recipe. I guess I missed a couple of days around here. How did you injure your eye? At least you were lucky to have MissCatt to look after you.
You\’re not the only one looking forward to the hummers. Last year I saw my first one on April 12…had put the feeder out the day before. If I don\’t have it out, one usually comes to the kitchen window to let me know they\’re here. And we WILL be back from Oregon in time. Glad your eye is better. Now I have to catch up and find out what happened to it…. (embarrassed face here.)
Well Im sure glad to hear of the empovement with your eye . That can be a very scary feeling not knowing for certian if there is damage. I have been through that with eye strain last summer and ended up at the hospital emerg. It took sometime to heal and the red was awful in it for a long time. I looked beaten. 🙂 or a tree jump in front of me.The weather has sure been awful all over. Were off on holidays soon I think now that the weather is settling in the Souther States and its getting warmer by the days. Take care of your eye Carole. Also Im so happy to hear you will all the hummers coming back. I cant wait to see your view. I get a few that come to my flowers on the migration to the north. They come from Mexico I think. Maybe I will see some when Im in Ar. Its desert mind up.Take care my dear friendLove and Hugs
Im not leaving for a week or two.
So glad your eye is on the mend. I remember (back in 1999) looking forward to celebrating the upcoming year 2000 (already had tickets bought for a gala event, a hotel room booked) and the morning before I decided to clean out a hallway closet. I bent down to move a box and caught my eye on the edge of the box. Ended up with a cut in the cornea. The pain was terrible and the eye would not stop watering. Needless to say, we were unable to go out and celebrate and every morning I had to go down to the medical clinic for a week so they could put in special drops and keep tabs on how my eye was healing. It took almost two weeks before I could walk around without an eye patch. We have had an unbelievably mild winter….springlike conditions….even some flowers have started blooming. Of course, that would happen the year our province hosts the winter Olympics. Thankfully the vast majority of snow events are being held at a resort high up in the mountains. Not sure what is going to happen to the few events that are supposed to occur on the local mountains though…..at present they are busy trucking snow from one of our provincial parks up the mountain….a good 100 miles. I had the misfortune of driving behind one of these trucks and trailers the other day….they had only gone half the distance and already the load was beginning to melt. Anyone driving behind these vehicles had to have windshield wipers going full blast. Who knew six years ago that it was going to be an El Nino year. But seriously….the IOC were not very bright ….choosing Vancouver, the mildest city in Canada, for the Winter Olympics. I hope your rain stops soon. Rock slides can be very scary…I just hope they are not affecting homes.
Glad you\’re feeling better. We kept having so much trouble with ants I had to quit putting out humming bird feeders. Maybe I\’ll try again in a different location this year.Be safe on those roads.
My hummingbird day is about May 7th or so. Can\’t wait!
